Hosted by Brian Luce and sponsored by the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music, Mary Karen Clardy, Leonard Garrison, Katherine Kemler, Ronda Mains, Susan Milan, and Diane Schultz provide a roundtable discussion of flute teaching at the collegiate level during the international COVID-19 mitigation period. The discussion outlines teaching strategies, pedagogies, and outcomes on student performance measurement.
Brian performed the premiere recordings of William Mathias’ Capriccio, Op. 46 No. 2 with Rex Woods and the Concertino, Op. 65 with Sara Fraker, Marissa Olegario, and Rex Woods.William Mathias was one of the most significant and prolific Welsh composers of the 20th century. His flexible and highly approachable style can be heard in the holiday mood of the Suite Parisienne, the brilliance and lyricism of the Capriccio for flute and piano and the wonderfully rhapsodic Sonata for Harp. Mathias’s songs are among the most communicative settings of their kind, including Pan Oeddwn Fachgen (A Dream of Youth), considered by the composer to be ‘one of the finest lyrical poems in modern Welsh’.
Brian Luce, professor of flute at the University of Arizona and Yamaha Performing Artist, will present this annual TMEA All-State Audition Masterclass at Plano West High School. In addition to audition techniques and technical tips, this class will focus on strategies for kinesiological body usage to prepare a successful, anxiety-free audition.
